Embracing Menopause
Nine years ago I had a midline laparotomy to remove, as it turned out, a rather large dermoid cyst which had decided to grow inside me and subsequently destroy my ovaries. The little (or large as it turned out!) minx had been growing there for some time, probably years, without me knowing. Something, which I didn’t know at the time, is quite common. By its removal, along with what was left of my ovaries and fallopian tubes, meant my medically induced menopause kicked in BIG TIME post op! Wowsers…that was a shock!!!!
What, no help or advice?
Menopause is the next phase in a woman’s life and onewhich many of us aren’t really prepared for. When you’re expecting a baby, you can go to pre-natal classes, get advice from specialists, as well as have a mid-wife for support. But for those of us coming into menopause, we’re lucky if we have a women’s health specialist at our local GP surgery.
Just the beginning…
But shouldn’t see menopause as the end of our youth – hell no! It’s the beginning of a new phase in our lives, where we take back control of our health and wellbeing. And learning about what is happening – physically, mentally and emotionally is critical to that.
That’s why I’m on a mission to help women with their menopause health and fitness.
In a weird sort of way I feel very fortunate that I knew I was hurtling into menopause due to my surgery. Not that I knew what to expect as no one told me but at least I knew.
This has made me rediscover myself, and has taken me down the path to help educate, advise and support as many people as I can in all things menopause.
